Last month, 19 of our Year 10 and 11 students enjoyed a long weekend in Madrid. Students carried out a number of tasks in Spanish and during the trip they visited many places of interest in the city, including the Royal Palace, Plaza Mayor, Puerta del Sol, Retiro Park and the Santiago Bernabéu stadium.

On arrival, Mrs Fernandez, a ‘madrileña’ by adoption herself, expertly guided some rather excitable students through the busy streets of a European capital on a bustling Friday night to reach our accommodation.

Then, on a gloriously sunny Saturday morning, the students visited the Royal Palace, had lunch near the Opera House and then took a stroll in the Retiro Park; Jacob and Joe hired electric scooters using their phones and whizzed around the lake. That night, we had a wonderful meal in the nightlife area of Las Letras that included: tortilla, chorizo, croquetas and calamari.

On Sunday we visited the home of Real Madrid, the Santiago Bernebéu stadium, on a somewhat cold and cloudy day. Later that day, there was time for shopping and another great meal at Casa Mingo, famous for its ‘chorizo en sidra’, tortilla and chicken.

On the last day, we visited the Reina Sofía museum where we saw Picasso’s masterpiece: Guernica. It was a fantastic trip with great food, cultural experiences and company.
