Embley’s top ski racers have achieved third place in the Independent Schools Association (ISA) National Indoor Ski Championships 2018, having competed against 450 skiers from over 50 schools across the UK. The team has been selected for the National Schools’ Squad for the 2018-19 season and it is now eligible to enter the British Schools Winter Games in February next year.
The school’s A Team and B Team put in a superb performance at the ISA Championships. Having trained as a team during the school’s weekly ski programme, and following a ski trip to Tonale in Italy at Easter, Embley’s young skiers have been developing their skills in readiness for this, the team’s first competitive challenge.
With around 12 tricky slalom gates, deep rutted racing lines and numerous spills taking place, every skier managed faultless runs. With the best of two times to count, the times came in… 19.7s, 20.6s and 17.5s, it was tense close racing. Then 12.7s and an amazing 10.5s! Chloe (Year 7) came fifth in her group, Katie (Year 7) was only a few seconds behind her and Edward (Year 9) ran 19th against some really tough competition. Charlie (Year 9) put in a blistering attack, Joshua (Year 8) was definitely a stylish skier, and Oscar (Year 9), with all the snow and 20 seconds all to himself on the piste, was very happy. And William (Year 9), dancing round the poles like a freestyler, looked very at home. Ben (Year 7) has always been consistent and he was certainly that with two almost identical 20s runs. Daniel (Year 7), the team’s reserve, and Isla (Year 3) enjoyed taking part in the practice session and course inspection along with all skiers before the race. We’re hoping to enter a junior team into the competition next year.
Congratulations to the Embley Ski Team.
