Last Friday, we hosted a launch party at the Royal Lymington Yacht Club to celebrate the start of our keelboat sailing programme for 2019. Our boats are now in the water, after some diligent preparations by students and staff over the Easter holidays, and this year’s sailing programme promises to be bigger and better than ever.

Once again, our Senior School students will enjoy weekly keelboat and powerboat training as part of our curriculum (April to October) and, from Year 3, Prep School pupils will have the opportunity to learn to sail aboard our keelboats in the Summer term.

This year, our sailors will have the opportunity to train and compete in the:

New for 2019: Deep Water Racing

Our 2019 season brings a whole new aspect to the Embley keelboat experience with the addition of a 37 foot deep-water race boat (Stewart 37). Set up for single and short-handed racing, she is easily driven, hitting 10 knots in very moderate winds and planing up into the mid-teens when the wind fills her spinnaker. But with a 2.5 tonne keel eight feet below the waterline, she is as stiff and predictable.

Exciting and challenging, but well-proven, the stripped-out race thoroughbred will take our more accomplished sailors into junior offshore group races, cross-channel, Cowes week, Round the Island and ultimately the 2021 Fastnet race if we can qualify. This is true progression from recreational keelboating into demanding, collaborative, team-building personal development.

Senior School Keelboat Programme sign up

Please encourage and remind your young, aspiring crews and skippers to sign up on the Keelboat Programme sheet every Friday then they know exactly what they are doing in their next Games session the following week. If you would like your son or daughter to start training for their RYA certificates, please contact Mr Churchill directly so he can schedule sessions accordingly.
