Music scholars should demonstrate exceptional musical talent and are expected to participate fully in the musical life of the school.
Candidates applying for entry at 11+ (Year 7) should have reached Grade 4 (minimum) on their instrument of choice by the date of the scholarship assessment but do not need to have taken grade examinations. Higher standards for 13+ (Year 9) will normally be expected. At Year 12, candidates should demonstrate a musical ability to Grade 5+ as well as have a proficient grasp of music theory.
Candidates will be invited to an audition and interview with our Head of Music in January. They are required to prepare two contrasting pieces of music. The arrangements should last no longer than 10 minutes in total and candidates are responsible for providing their own accompanist, if needed. The pieces may be performed on any combination of instruments or voice.
Candidates will be interviewed informally about their past and present musical activities and may bring with them any evidence to support this. They should be prepared to discuss what they enjoy about music making. Candidates can expect to be given tests of aural recognition, sight reading or improvisation.
