At our second ever venture into competitive ski racing, Embley came second overall at the National Schools Indoor Open Ski Racing Championships and will now head out to the British Independent Schools Ski Racing Alpine Championships in Italy next Spring.

With ski race training every Monday at Snowtrax Bournemouth’s dry slope, the school has developed a pretty impressive crew. Our teams are growing every week, with Prep School children joining in and new Senior School skiers coming on board. We now run a full ‘A’ and ‘B’ team training group with Nicole, a national team coach and race star, while the ‘debutants’ and improvers are trained in the fundamentals by the more recreational coach, Brian at Snowtrax.

New team member Niamh (Year 9), who is a leading UK youth skier, achieved 1st place at the Championships while Chloe (Year 8) turned in a very pleasing 5th place in the U14 girls’ race.

Sadly, no medal for Ed (Year 10), the team captain, on this occasion but achieving 6th place in the U16s by 0.15 seconds against some real race hardened time servers is extremely respectable. Emily (Year 7) came 12th in the U14 girls, Charlie (Year 10) followed on at 14th in the U16s, Ben (Year 8) at 15th in the U14 boys, and newcomer Taijan (Year 9) looked good and is training to improve on his 18th in the U16s while Oscar L (Year 10) put in the points with his 22nd place in the U16s.

Dan (Year 8), the team mascot and reserve, enjoyed his second event and is training hard on Mondays, determined to get into the start gate at some point soon.

Our next challenge lies further afield at the British Independent Schools Ski Racing Alpine Championships in Pila, Italy, high up in the Aosta valley in the shadow of Mont Blanc, in March.

A last, and massive mention must go out to Isla (Year 4) from our Prep School. Isla has been training with the Senior School students for three weeks and attended the Junior Open sessions on the 12th November. First time out and competing for Embley in a team of one, she is now the 10th fastest U10 girls’ racer in the National Schools Opens. Isla will be training and racing with the school in Pila.

Embley has race and non-race training available for all children from Year 3, who are welcome to join the Monday Ski sessions. Please get in touch with Mr Churchill or sign up to skiing on next term’s co-curricular schedule.
